BACK TO WORK

With spring having arrived and Ears starting to feel better after being uneven behind, the training has started again.

In January, Ears started having some issues with his left hind and was given some time off – I periodically rode him through the winter to test his gaits, but by-and-large he had a two month winter holiday.  Now that he is starting to feel better, I am bringing him back to work.  One of the simple things I am doing this spring is to make sure he does a fair amount of hill work to help strengthen and tighten his stifles.

The ring work has started as well, but I am bringing him back slowly.  Being a thin skinned thoroughbred, he’s not an easy keeper in the winter.  I want to schedule his work load so that it is not too demanding while he is recovering some of the weight loss he experienced over the winter.  To make a long story short, I am really looking forwards to the spring grass and warm temperatures!

For the time being, I’m keeping the rides fairly simple in terms of the work level and making sure that I keep them a reasonable length.

Do you have a horse that hangs on the bit and feels like he is pulling you around the ring?

Does he get strong when you canter? And do your shoulders or arms end up aching during and after a ride? You may even have considered getting a harsher bit to get the horse out of your hands.
