Tim Lewthwaite Horseback Riding Instruction & Training

Fun Facts

First of all, hello and welcome to TLRiding.com!

The idea behind this site is to provide a combination of useful lesson plans, interesting photography and a sense of community to both students who take lessons with me and for visiting riders and horse people who happen to come across the site as they search the Web.

My name is Tim Lewthwaite and I am an independently insured riding instructor in Maryland, USA. I have been riding for over 30 years and have trained both in the United Kingdom and the United States. My early training took place at the Yorkshire Riding Centre where I spent a year as a working student. Like many youngsters, I had been a once a week rider at various equestrian centers throughout my youth – the results were what you might called mixed.  But, I had been bitten by the horse bug and it has never really left.

Yorkshire was an eye-opener, both in terms of horse care and understanding the demands of stepping up the quality of my riding. I rode in one lesson a day while I was there with the remainder of the day in lectures or taking care of the three horses in my charge.  In recent years, I have returned to spend a week at the YRC to refresh my skills and broaden my knowledge.

Once I completed my year in the north of England, I came to the United States and worked at a series of horse facilities while attending university. My horse career has involved everything from a being breeding assistant at an Egyptian Arabian farm to a stallion manager at thoroughbred stud – and fear not, I have done plenty of mucking stalls throughout!  Since graduating with a master’s degree, I have continued to train horses and give lessons while I also pursue a career in publishing.

I currently ride and instruct on weeknights and weekends. I own and train Aries (better know as Ears), an off the track thoroughbred that I purchased as a three year old.

I have an easygoing teaching style that is well suited for the recreational rider who wants to both enjoy their horse and get a better understanding of how to communicate with them through the language of touch that is known as riding.

I hope you enjoy the site and also find real value in the lessons.  And don’t forget to keep riding!

I am available for lessons and charge reasonable rates.  To contact me, send an email through the contact form or call (410) 381-0433.

The Disconnected Horse
by Tim Lewthwaite

Do you have a horse that hangs on the bit and feels like he is pulling you around the ring?

Does he get strong when you canter? And do your shoulders or arms end up aching during and after a ride? You may even have considered getting a harsher bit to get the horse out of your hands.
